[September 2021] Akihabara store closures: Cafe EURO closes

September is the final month of the current, long-running state of emergency.
With vaccination progressing and Silver Week coming up, people were going out more frequently in Tokyo, so we've compiled a list of Akihabara stores that closed this month.

Akihabara store closures in August 2021 (in chronological order)

Gyukaku Akihabara Electric Town Entrance Store [Closed indefinitely]

Opening date: July 2007
Closing date: Sunday, June 12, 2021

A yakiniku chain restaurant with locations nationwide.
The store next to Sega Building 4 has been closed indefinitely.
There are two other stores in Akihabara: Gyukaku Akihabara 3rd Store and Gyukaku Akihabara Showa Dori Entrance Store.

Initially, it was announced that the store was closed, but later it was posted as closed, and I wasn't sure what was actually going on, so I inquired,

Closed indefinitely due to building issues

The answer I received was:

Good Smile x Animate Cafe Akihabara

Opening date: Friday, June 25, 2014
Closing date: Monday, May 20, 2021

Located on the 5th floor of Akihabara Culture's Zone, this cafe collaborates with various anime.
The menu includes desserts and other items inspired by collaborative works.
Limited edition merchandise was also on sale.

ACOS Akihabara

Opening date: July 2014
Closing date: Monday, May 20, 2021

A cosplay total shop located on the same floor as "Good Smile x Animate Cafe Akihabara".
In addition to costumes, they also sold a variety of items needed for cosplay, such as colored contact lenses and cosmetics.

Nihonbashiya Chobei Atre Akihabara

Opening date: Thursday, March 27, 2019
Closing date: Monday, May 20, 2021

This Japanese confectionery shop, with its main store in Nihonbashi, cherishes traditions dating back to the Edo period.
It was located on the first floor of Atre Akihabara 1, but closed this month.

Monky Soft Akihabara store

Opening date: 2004
Closing date: Sunday, June 26, 2021

An adult video shop on the first and second floors of the Monkey Town Building, across Kanda Myojin Street from Akihabara Cultures Zone.
Before closing, there was a clearance sale with all items at half price.

Monki Net Akihabara store

Opening date: 2004
Closing date: Sunday, June 26, 2021

An internet cafe located above Monky Soft Akihabara where you can enjoy the internet and manga.
You can eat as much sweets and soft serve ice cream as you like, and breakfast is also free.
In response to the growing demand for teleworking, a coworking space was also set up.

SUN SHOP Ⅱ

Closing date: Thursday, June 23, 2021

This adult shop was located on the third floor of the Monkey Town Building, where the above-mentioned "Monky Soft Akihabara Store" and "Monky Net Akihabara Store" are also located.
It specialized in bondage adult videos.
All stores in the Monkey Town Building have closed, so it will be interesting to see what happens next.

CAFE EURO

Opening date: July 2007
Closing date: Wednesday, May 29, 2021

A cafe on Junk Street, lined with shops selling PC parts and junk items
Their specialties include ice cream, crepes, and hamburgers made with Wagyu beef.
An announcement was made that the restaurant would close at the end of January 2021, but the restaurant to which it was being sold canceled the plan, and the closure at the end of January was canceled.
The store later rescinded its closure plan and continued to operate, but a buyer was found and the store will close its doors after 14 years of operation on September 29, 2021.

ROYS

Closing date: Thursday, June 30, 2021

A long-established cafe located along Showa-dori Street, with a distinctive green sign.
In addition to coffee, they also offer a wide variety of sandwiches and pasta at reasonable prices.

Tokka Bazaar 2nd Store [Relocation]

Opening date: 2015
Closing date: Thursday, June 30, 2021

Tokka Bazaar 2nd store will close its Junk Street location at the end of September and relocate to a location near the APA Hotel Ueno Hirokoji store.
It opened on October 4, 2021.
In June, "Tokka Bazaar 1st Store" closed due to consolidation.

[August 2021] Akihabara store closings

CAFE EURO ends 14-year history

In September 2021, two cafes that had been operating in Akihabara for a long time, CAFE EURO and ROYS, closed.
With the closure of CAFE EURO, which has been a popular spot for 14 years, the appearance of Junk Street is likely to change.

In addition, all stores in the Monkey Town Building along Kanda Myojin Street have closed.
There are many vacant buildings in this area, so I wonder if they will be redeveloped.
I'm curious to see how things will develop in the future.
