Create illustrations and animations with this free software! 5 recommended free software
It's so sad that my favorite anime that I wanted to watch has been postponed due to the effects of COVID-19! Damn it... Some of you may be thinking, "Since there's no anime I want to watch left, I'll just watch some old anime..."
But wait! Why don't you just make your own anime? (Suddenly)
First of all, when creating an anime, in addition to the PC itself, monitor, and pen tablet, you also need painting software and animation production software to draw pictures, but unfortunately, the cost is...
So, here's some free painting and animation software!
Today I'd like to introduce some recommended animation production software, so I've put together a list!
Harmony

A free trial version of Harmony, an animation production software from Toon Boom, a Canadian company.
Harmony is a practical animation production software used by various animation studios around the world, including Disney, Warner, Toei, and Shin-Ei Animation. It handles all aspects of animation production, from key animation to filming, making it ideal for those looking to get into full-scale animation production or work at an animation production company. Harmony's free trial versions are available in three versions: Essentials, Advanced, and Premium, each with features tailored to their intended use. All are fully functional and can be tried out indefinitely! Note, however, that any edits saved or saved in the trial version cannot be used in the retail version. Toon Boom also offers Storyboard Pro, a software for creating storyboards and video storyboards. Similar to Harmony, it also offers a free trial version with unlimited full functionality, so it's a good idea to try it out as well. It runs on both Windows and OS X.
Incidentally, Conan's Para Para dance, which was revived for the first time in 20 years in this year's Detective Conan TV anime, was also reportedly produced by the anime's production company, TMS Entertainment, which actually used Harmony.

CACANi

This is animation production software developed to improve the efficiency of anime production and reduce the workload of animators. It features an automatic coloring system and an automatic inbetween generation function, which allows for efficient production of tasks that would otherwise require a lot of manpower and time. It is actually used by animation production companies such as Sunrise and David Productions. The free version of the software appears to support Japanese, but some parts are in English and are incomplete. (The official Japanese manual also appears to only be for the older version.)
There are websites where volunteers provide detailed instructions in Japanese using videos, so it might be a good idea to use those as well. Only Windows is supported.

Open Toonz

Dwango's free anime production software, OpenToonz, is based on the original "Toonz" software developed by Italian company Digital Video. Dwango developed and released it as open source software that anyone can use and improve for free. Studio Ghibli, which actually uses Toonz, developed its own in-house features for Toonz, as well as plug-ins that allow for adding effects. It runs on Linux, Windows, and OSX. Great! Now you can get an environment similar to Ghibli's anime production for free!
Chalk

This is a free, open-source painting software developed by KDE and the Krita Foundation. It's completely free, yet offers powerful tools comparable to paid painting software like Photoshop, and even includes stop-motion animation capabilities. While it's primarily a painting software, it's also practical and excellent for creating animations! However, many users complain that it runs slowly. It's available for Linux, Windows, and OSX/macOS, and is also distributed separately. It supports 70 languages. It supports not only Japanese but also Esperanto!

Blender

This is an integrated 3DCG creation software that can handle a series of tasks, from modeling to rendering, animation, non-linear video editing, and effect application. Although it is free, it is not inferior to paid 3DCG creation software. However, it has too many functions, making it difficult for beginners to use. If you are serious about creating 3DCG animations, you should definitely give it a try! However, you will be in for a rude awakening if you don't make sure your PC meets the minimum system requirements to use it!
It can run on supported operating systems such as Windows, OSX, and Linux.
