How to Disassemble a PS4 Controller: Easy Repair and Cleaning for Beginners

Are you all playing the games you bought during the Steam Winter Sale?
I basically use the PS4 controller DualShock 4 (Below is DS4) I'm playing it, and it's really easy to use.
I think it's easier to use than the XBOX controller among the controllers that can be used on a PC.

Now, as I continue to use the DS4 heavily every day, one piece of information came to me.

"PS4 production discontinued"

"Some PS4' has been discontinued, but it is unclear when production of all PS4s will end.
At the same time, there is a possibility that production of the DS4 will also end.

This article introduces the disassembly procedure for the DS4 with the intention of repairing it, so that you can continue to use your favorite DS4 even after production of the DS4 has ended.

Things to note before disassembling your PS4 controller!

Basically, by disassembling the game console itself or any peripherals, you will no longer be able to receive manufacturer support or repairs.

Also, if you have knowledge of electronic devices, you will probably be able to recover to some extent even if you fail to disassemble it, but if you make a mistake when disassembling it once, the worst case scenario is that you will not be able to use the DS4, so we have included images of the parts you need to pay particular attention to when disassembling it, so be sure to read it carefully before proceeding!

PS4 controller disassembly procedure

A precision screwdriver is used to disassemble the DS4.
All you need is a #00 Phillips screwdriver, so if you don't have one, get one ready.

First, start by removing the cover from the DS4 body.
Since many small parts are used, be sure to secure a sufficient work space and be careful not to lose any parts.
Turn the DS4 upside down and screw it in place.Remove the four screws.

Once the screws are removed, the body is split into two parts.
If you leave it as it is, there is a risk that the cable will break while it is still connected, so make sure to disconnect it properly.

[Caution!] Vibration motor cable
There is a high possibility that the contacts will come off.
The cable itself is thin, so be careful not to break it.

[Caution!] LR trigger spring
Be careful not to drop or lose it.
It is possible to operate it without the spring, but the feel will be strange.

Now, first I was able to remove the cover.

Next, disconnect the battery cable and then remove the battery.


Then remove the screws that secure the battery case...


Next, pull out the printed wiring on the top of the main unit to remove the circuit board.

This is also a small part, so be careful not to lose it.
Be especially careful with the PS button, as it would be a disaster if you lost it!

PS4 controller [different versions]

I'm sure most of you already know this, but I'll include it here for reference.
There are old and new models of the DS4.
There are almost no differences between the new and old models, but there are some minor differences, so I will explain the differences between the new and old models by looking at the Wave Blue (old model, bottom image) and Titanium Blue (new model, top image) that I own.

・Wired connection to PS4 is possible

The old DS4 accepted input via Bluetooth connection even when the USB cable was plugged into the PS4 console.
The new DS4 accepts input via a wired connection.
This is probably something you don't need to worry about in normal use.

- You can check the color of the light bar from the touchpad

The new DS4 allows you to see the color of the light bar through the touchpad.
Some models even have a light bar that is linked to the game, making them even more convenient.

-Difference in button color

The color of the various buttons has been changed from glossy black to matte gray, making dirt less noticeable.
It's a small change that may not be obvious at first glance, but it's a good change that takes usability into consideration.

There are also differences in whether MOD kit (modification kit) parts can be used with the new and old DS4, so it's a good idea to check which version of DS4 you have.

Disassembly for parts or repair

This time, I disassembled the DS4 in anticipation of repairs.
I have already disassembled and reassembled the DS4 many times, so I am somewhat used to it, but for those disassembling it for the first time or those who are not used to detailed work, I would urge them to be careful not to break or lose parts.

Apparently you need a DS4 to play PS4 software on PS5So, although I don't think production of the DS4 will end anytime soon, if you want to continue using your beloved DS4, you might want to consider disassembling and repairing it.
