While Akihabara was bustling with activity during the long holiday in May, some stores also quietly closed their doors.
That place I've been thinking, "I'll go to someday," may actually be the last time I see it this month.

Akihabara stores closing in March 2025 (in chronological order)

Closed: 4 stores

MUJI 500 Akihabara Station Platform

Opening date: October 1, 2023
Closing date: March 13, 2025

Of the two MUJI stores in Akihabara, the one on platform 5 of the Sobu Line has closed. It was a reasonably priced store with most items priced under 500 yen.
The other store, MUJI Akihabara Trim, remains open.

TOAmart Akihabara store

TOAmart's original character?

Opening date: Around October 30, 2021
Closing date: March 18, 2025

TOAmart is a "half-price specialty store" that purchases directly from manufacturers without going through wholesalers and is based on the concept of specializing in half-price items. At its peak, there were 200 stores nationwide, but the number has continued to decline, and finally, the first and last store, the Akihabara store, has closed.

Daikoku Drug Akihabara West Exit Store

Opening date: October 31, 2024
Closing date: March 22, 2025

Daikoku Drugstore, located at the east and west exits of JR Akihabara Station, has closed one of its two stores, the Akihabara West Exit store. The aging building will be replaced, and the Akihabara streetscape will likely undergo major changes.

Sake Museum Akihabara Iwamotocho Branch

Opening date: October 14, 2024
Closing date: March 24, 2025

This standing bar offers a variety of drinks, including old whiskey, brandy, and wine, all at reasonable prices starting from 500 yen per glass. It closed less than a year after opening last year. The nearby store is still open, so why not try it out?

Conclusion

It's sad to see stores close, but that's part of the Akihabara cycle.
Even if your favorite character disappears, the city continues to evolve.
